When asked if I would direct this book musical, I agreed because I was given permission to make the show my own. I refused to simply remount the Broadway version because I felt the original staging had pushed the character, Felicia, out of the story. Luckily, the Lexington Theatre Company allowed me to avoid much of the “white savior” narrative that’s intrinsically built into the show. While honoring the original text I also made it a point to restore power and agency to Felicia's character throughout the entire tragic love story.
